Which airport for Santiago and the Cibao — STI vs POP vs SDQ vs PUJ

Answer first · updated September 2026 · written by the dispatch desk

If you are staying in Santiago, Jarabacoa, La Vega or Moca, fly into Cibao International Airport (STI) — it is 15 to 80 minutes from those destinations and has a small, fast-clearing terminal. If you are staying on the north coast at Playa Dorada, Sosúa or Cabarete, STI is usually still the better choice: Puerto Plata / Playa Dorada is 60 to 80 minutes from STI, Sosúa 75 to 95 minutes, Cabarete 85 to 105 minutes — often a shorter or comparable drive to flying into Puerto Plata (POP) once you account for POP's thinner flight schedule. Santo Domingo (SDQ) is roughly 2.25 to 2.75 hours from STI-side destinations and only makes sense if you are actually staying in the capital or the fare gap is large. Punta Cana (PUJ) only enters the picture as a genuine cross-island trip, about 4.25 to 5 hours by road. We run fixed-price transfers from STI to every one of these places, so whichever airport you land at, the transfer is booked the same way.

The short answer — STI for Santiago and the Cibao

Most people reading this page are deciding between flights, not airports. Cibao International Airport (STI / MDST) sits just outside Santiago de los Caballeros with a single, small passenger terminal that clears quickly — no long immigration queues, no sprawling concourse to cross. From the STI curb it is 15 to 25 minutes to central Santiago, 60 to 80 minutes to Puerto Plata and Playa Dorada, and 60 to 80 minutes up the mountain road to Jarabacoa.

STI carries direct flights from JetBlue, American, Delta, United, Frontier, Arajet, Copa, Sky High and Avianca, with routes to New York (JFK), Miami, Boston, Newark, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, Panama City and San Juan. That is enough scheduled capacity that flying into STI rather than routing through Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata rarely costs a meaningful amount on airfare.

POP and SDQ are not wrong answers — they answer different questions. POP serves Puerto Plata itself with a thinner schedule; SDQ serves the capital and the country's biggest route network. Both are covered below with the cases where each genuinely wins.

The four airports at a glance

Cibao International (STI) sits at the western edge of Santiago province, minutes from the city. Drive times from the curb: Licey/Tamboril and Santiago itself 10–25 minutes, Gurabo 20–30, Moca and La Vega 30–45, Jarabacoa 60–80, Puerto Plata/Playa Dorada 60–80, San Francisco de Macorís 75–95, Sosúa 75–95, Cabarete 85–105.

Puerto Plata (POP, Gregorio Luperón) sits on the north coast near Sosúa. It is the closest airport to Playa Dorada, Sosúa and Cabarete, but its scheduled flight network is thinner than STI's, so fares and frequency often push travellers toward STI or Santo Domingo instead.

Santo Domingo–Las Américas (SDQ) is the capital's airport, with the country's deepest route network. From STI-side destinations it is a further drive: roughly 2.25 to 2.75 hours to Santiago, Jarabacoa or the north coast. To Santo Domingo city itself it is the correct airport.

Punta Cana (PUJ) serves the eastern resort zone and is a genuine cross-island destination from Santiago — about 4.25 to 5 hours by road — never a practical alternative for a Cibao or north-coast stay.

When STI wins — Santiago, the Cibao valley and the north coast

Choose an airport by the complete itinerary, not only a map distance. STI is the Santiago airport; a north-coast hotel or onward connection still needs its own road-transfer plan.

VIP prices are one-way, per vehicle for 1–6 passengers. Taxes included. Santiago $59; La Vega $89; Jarabacoa $149; Puerto Plata $145; Sosúa $159; Cabarete $169 USD. VIP 7–14: +$40 USD.

The first-hour argument is the strongest one. After a long flight, a 15-to-25-minute ride into central Santiago from STI's small terminal beats a longer connection through Santo Domingo every time.

When Puerto Plata (POP) makes sense

POP is the closest airport to Playa Dorada, Sosúa and Cabarete, and it is the right call when a direct flight from your home city lands there with a good schedule and fare — some charter and seasonal routes do exactly that for European travellers.

Run the comparison honestly: if a POP flight costs noticeably more or connects awkwardly, the STI flight plus an 85-to-105-minute fixed-price transfer to Cabarete is often the better total, especially with STI's wider US network.

We serve POP as an alternative origin on request — if your flight lands there instead, tell dispatch and the same fixed-price transfer logic applies from that airport.

When Santo Domingo (SDQ) makes sense

The honest cases: you are spending real time in the capital — the Colonial Zone, family, business — before or after the Cibao; your route into SDQ is dramatically better on schedule or price; or STI flights are sold out on your dates, which happens in peak weeks.

If SDQ is the right airport for you, book it without hesitation: we run the SDQ-to-Cibao transfer as a fixed-price service with the same flight tracking and name-sign meet as STI.

Punta Cana (PUJ): only as a cross-island trip

PUJ is not a realistic alternative airport for a Santiago or Cibao stay — it serves the opposite end of the country. The only reason it appears on this page is that some travellers combine a Cibao stay with a few days in Punta Cana, and that leg is a genuine long transfer: about 4.25 to 5 hours by road, priced at $449 VIP per vehicle, one way.

If your itinerary genuinely includes both regions, book the STI-to-Punta Cana run as its own long-distance transfer rather than trying to compare it against a local Cibao airport choice.

The transfer math — and how booking works from any airport

Every transfer we run is the same product regardless of airport: a private vehicle, a fixed US-dollar price per vehicle confirmed in writing before you fly, flight tracking so a delay moves the driver and not the price, a name sign at arrivals, and payment to the driver on arrival. One to six passengers per vehicle; seven to fourteen move to a van at a small surcharge on local zones.

This is where per-vehicle pricing changes the airport comparison. Shared shuttles price per seat, so a long SDQ run multiplies by headcount; a fixed per-vehicle rate is one number for the family. The price list shows every zone from STI, and the long-run rates cover SDQ and Santo Domingo city.

Split airports are normal and easy: into SDQ because the flight worked, out of STI because the return did. It is one booking message, priced as two one-way legs.

Questions we get on this

Is it worth flying into Santo Domingo to save on airfare?
VIP prices are one-way, per vehicle for 1–6 passengers. Taxes included. Santiago $59; La Vega $89; Jarabacoa $149; Puerto Plata $145; Sosúa $159; Cabarete $169 USD. VIP 7–14: +$40 USD.
How long is the drive from STI to Puerto Plata or Cabarete?
Puerto Plata / Playa Dorada is 60 to 80 minutes, Sosúa 75 to 95 minutes, and Cabarete 85 to 105 minutes, over the Cordillera Septentrional pass. We run all three as fixed-price transfers with flight tracking.
Should I fly into Puerto Plata (POP) instead of Santiago (STI) for Cabarete?
POP is geographically closer, but STI usually has a deeper schedule and better fares from North America. Compare the total cost of the STI flight plus the fixed-price 85-to-105-minute transfer against a direct POP flight before deciding.
Can I book one transfer into STI and out of SDQ?
Yes — split airports are a normal booking. Each leg is priced as its own one-way route, and the departure pickup is timed on the buffer for your zone. Send both flight numbers in one WhatsApp message and we quote the pair.
Which airport should I use for Jarabacoa?
STI, without a real alternative — it is 60 to 80 minutes away at $149 VIP per vehicle up the mountain road. From SDQ the same trip runs well over 3 hours.
Do you serve Punta Cana from Santiago?
Yes, as a single long cross-island destination page: STI to Punta Cana is about 4.25 to 5 hours, priced at $449 VIP per vehicle, one way. It is never used as an alternative airport for a Cibao stay.
