Two ports on the same stretch of coast
Amber Cove and Taíno Bay both sit on the Puerto Plata waterfront, a few minutes apart, and most Santiago-area cruise transfers use the same road regardless of which one your ship calls at. Amber Cove is the larger, purpose-built terminal a short drive west of the city; Taíno Bay sits closer to the Malecón and the Puerto Plata Teleférico.
If your ticket says Puerto Plata, Amber Cove or Taíno Bay, this is the terminal group. Tell dispatch which one when you book, since the exact drop-off point within Puerto Plata differs by a few minutes.
A third possibility is that you are only flying into STI and staying inland — if your ship leaves from elsewhere entirely, you need an airport transfer and a hotel rather than a port transfer; the prices page has the zone rates.
Flying into STI on embarkation day
This works, and many passengers do it, but it needs a margin. Your driver tracks the flight, so a delay does not lose the booking. What a delay can lose is the ship, and the ship is the one thing we cannot hold.
The rule of thumb we give people: land at STI at least five hours before the boarding window closes. That covers immigration and baggage at STI's small, quick terminal — usually 15 to 30 minutes — plus the 60-to-80-minute drive over the mountain pass, plus the check-in queue at the terminal.
If your flight lands later than that, the safer plan is a night in Santiago or Puerto Plata and a morning run to the port. It costs a hotel night; missing embarkation costs the cruise.
Timing the drive to the terminal
We plan the pickup backwards from your boarding window, exactly the way a departure transfer is planned backwards from a flight. Tell dispatch the terminal, the ship name and the latest boarding time printed on your cruise documents, and we set the lobby time from there.
As a working figure, from Santiago hotels we aim to arrive at Amber Cove or Taíno Bay around two and a half to three hours before the boarding cut-off, allowing for rain over the Cordillera Septentrional pass and any roadworks on the Gregorio Luperón highway.
Arriving early at a cruise terminal is not wasted time. You drop bags with the porters, clear check-in and security, and are on board while the late arrivals are still queuing. Arriving late is not recoverable.
Disembarkation: the pier pickup
Coming off a ship is slower than coming off a plane. Groups are called by deck or by luggage tag colour, the terminal hall fills, and the gap between the published arrival time and the moment you actually walk out with your suitcase is routinely an hour or more.
That is fine — the driver waits. Give dispatch the ship name and the scheduled arrival, and the driver is at the terminal exit with your name on a sign, in the meeting area the port allows vehicles to use.
The most common disembarkation booking is port to STI for a flight home the same day. Tell us the flight number too, so we can tell you honestly whether the timing works over the mountain pass.
What it costs
The port runs are priced like every other route on the site: fixed per vehicle, not per person, with taxes included and no surcharge for a night or early-morning departure.
Amber Cove and Taíno Bay are different meeting points in the Puerto Plata area. Share the ship, terminal, date and check-in or all-aboard constraints before confirming a road transfer.
VIP prices are one-way, per vehicle for 1–6 passengers. Taxes included. Santiago $59; La Vega $89; Jarabacoa $149; Puerto Plata $145; Sosúa $159; Cabarete $169 USD. VIP 7–14: +$40 USD.
Bigger groups move up to a van rather than paying a second fare, adding $40 VIP. Cruise luggage tends to be large and plentiful, so tell dispatch the real number of suitcases when you book — it decides the vehicle.
Combining a port run with a day on the coast
Because Amber Cove and Taíno Bay sit right on the Puerto Plata waterfront, passengers with a long port call sometimes ask for a driver for a few hours rather than a straight transfer: the Malecón, the Teleférico cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, or Playa Dorada's beach for the afternoon.
That is a day trip with a private driver — the vehicle waits while you sightsee and returns you to the pier well before all-aboard. The day trips guide explains how the waiting time and the fixed price work.
We do not sell shore excursions or cable-car tickets. We provide the vehicle and the driver, and we build the day around the all-aboard time your ship gives you, which is always earlier than the sailing time.
Practical details cruise passengers ask about
Child seats are available on request when you book, on port runs as much as airport runs. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters need to be flagged at booking so the right vehicle comes.
Payment works the way it does on every transfer: fixed price, agreed in the WhatsApp confirmation, nothing added at the terminal.
Terminals are working ports with controlled access, so meeting points are wherever the port authority allows vehicles that day. Your driver knows the current arrangement and messages you on arrival.
How to book
Message the dispatch desk on WhatsApp at +1 849 377 5889 with: the terminal (Amber Cove or Taíno Bay), the ship name, the date, the direction (to the port or from it), your flight number if one is involved, the number of passengers and the number of suitcases.
You get a fixed price for the vehicle and a lobby or arrivals meeting time worked backwards from your boarding window. Most cruise passengers book the airport pickup, the port run and the return to STI in one conversation.
Send the flight, get the price in writing
Hotel name, flight number, date and party size. We reply with the fixed rate, track the flight and meet you inside arrivals with a name sign. Pay the driver on arrival.
Book on WhatsAppQuestions we get on this
- How far is Amber Cove from Santiago airport?
- VIP prices are one-way, per vehicle for 1–6 passengers. Taxes included. Santiago $59; La Vega $89; Jarabacoa $149; Puerto Plata $145; Sosúa $159; Cabarete $169 USD. VIP 7–14: +$40 USD.
- Is Taíno Bay the same distance as Amber Cove?
- Yes, both sit on the Puerto Plata waterfront a few minutes apart, and the drive time and price from STI are the same. Tell dispatch which terminal your ship uses when you book.
- Can I fly into STI the same day my cruise leaves?
- Yes, with margin. Aim to land at least five hours before boarding closes, which covers immigration, baggage, the mountain-pass drive and terminal check-in. If your flight lands later, a night in Santiago or Puerto Plata before the port run is the safer plan.
- Will the driver wait if we are slow getting off the ship?
- Yes. Disembarkation is called in groups and routinely runs an hour or more past the published arrival time; that is expected and included. The driver waits at the terminal exit with your name on a sign.
- Is the price per person or per vehicle?
- Per vehicle, like every transfer we run. Tell us the real suitcase count when you book so we send the right vehicle.
- Can the driver stay with us during a port call?
- Yes — that is a private day with a driver rather than a transfer. The vehicle waits while you visit the Malecón, the Teleférico or Playa Dorada beach, and returns you to the pier before the all-aboard time.
