STI airport taxi in 2026 vs a pre-booked private car

Comparison · fixed rates from our price list · updated August 2026

Use the written STI VIP quote as the reference for our service. Curbside taxi prices are independent offers and can change; agree their complete scope separately if comparing transport options. VIP prices are one-way, per vehicle for 1–6 passengers. Taxes included. Santiago $59; La Vega $89; Jarabacoa $149; Puerto Plata $145; Sosúa $159; Cabarete $169 USD. VIP 7–14: +$40 USD.

What actually happens at the curb

You clear customs, walk through the small meeting hall past the drivers holding name signs, and step out toward the parking area. The licensed airport taxis line up in a marked rank with a dispatcher managing the queue. You state the destination, the dispatcher assigns a car and quotes a per-car price for that run, and you go. It is orderly and it works.

Two things to know. Between the customs exit and the rank you may be approached by people offering rides who are not the rank — the polite refusal is a firm 'no thank you' while you keep walking to the marked queue or to your own driver's sign. And the queue is a queue: when a couple of flights land close together, the wait can run ten to fifteen minutes with luggage.

The dispatcher's quote is per vehicle, not per person, and there is no meter. That part matches how private transfers work here; almost nothing at Dominican airports is metered.

Why we do not print a 2026 taxi tariff table

Plenty of websites publish a confident-looking table of official STI taxi rates. We are not going to, because we cannot verify a current board and a stale number helps nobody. What we hear back from guests who priced both is a spread roughly 25 to 45 percent above our fixed rates, wider on the longer runs to the coast and to Santo Domingo, and wider again late at night. That is an observed pattern reported to us, not a published tariff, and you should treat it as exactly that.

What we can state without hedging is our own side of the comparison, because we set it: the rates below are the ones we quote on WhatsApp, they include taxes and tolls, they are per vehicle for one to six passengers, and they do not change for a night landing, a delayed flight or a busy Saturday.

If you want the rank's current number, the honest way to get it is to ask the dispatcher at the rank when you land — which is precisely the timing problem this guide is about.

Our 2026 rates, in writing before you fly

Use the written STI VIP quote as the reference for our service. Curbside taxi prices are independent offers and can change; agree their complete scope separately if comparing transport options.

VIP prices are one-way, per vehicle for 1–6 passengers. Taxes included. Santiago $59; La Vega $89; Jarabacoa $149; Puerto Plata $145; Sosúa $159; Cabarete $169 USD. VIP 7–14: +$40 USD.

VIP is a clean, air-conditioned sedan or SUV depending on your bag count. VIP is a luxury SUV or executive van with water and a suited driver. Seven to fourteen passengers moves to a van: plus $40 VIP, plus $40 VIP on local destinations, with Santo Domingo and the other long runs quoted on WhatsApp.

The differences that are not about money

Flight tracking. We hold your booking against a flight number, so a two-hour delay moves the driver's schedule and costs nothing. A curb taxi cannot be late for you because it was never waiting for you — which sounds like an advantage until the rank is thin at 02:00.

The sign. Our driver stands inside arrivals, past customs, holding your name. You do not talk to anyone, price anything or choose a lane. For a first visit, or with children, or after a long flight, that is most of the value.

Certainty of number. The figure is in your WhatsApp thread before you leave home. There is nothing to negotiate at the car door, no surcharge for luggage, car seats or the hour of the day, and the driver collects the same amount that was written.

When the rank is the better choice

We will say it plainly: if you are a solo traveller landing at 11:00 with a carry-on and a Santiago hotel fifteen minutes away, the rank is fine. The dollar difference on that run is small, the wait is short in the morning, and you avoid planning anything in advance.

The calculation flips with distance, party size and hour. On Cabarete, Sosúa, Constanza and Santo Domingo the percentage gap turns into real money. With children and car seats the rank has nothing to offer you, because the seats have to be fitted in advance. And at night, when the queue thins out, a written price beats a spoken one.

There is also the boring case for pre-booking: you already know how the trip starts. No queue, no quote, no decision to make while you are carrying suitcases.

For the full rate list by destination and hotel, the prices page is the source we quote from, and every destination page carries the same figure with the drive time and the hotels covered.

This page stays deliberately narrow: it is the airport taxi rank comparison and nothing else. If your question is what a private transfer costs — vehicle classes, van sizing above six passengers, hotel-by-hotel examples — the how much is an STI transfer guide is the money hub for that, and the prices page holds the same table.

Questions we get on this

How much is a taxi from Santiago's airport to town in 2026?
The rank quotes a per-car price at the curb after you land; guests report roughly 25 to 45 percent above our fixed rate. Our written price to Santiago is $59 VIP, one-way, per vehicle for one to six passengers, taxes included.
Is there an official taxi tariff board at STI?
The rank prices per car by destination and the dispatcher quotes it when you reach the queue. We do not reprint a tariff table here because we cannot verify a current one, and a stale number would mislead you.
Are the airport taxis at STI safe?
Yes. The rank is the licensed ground-transport concession, run with a dispatcher and a marked queue. The friction is pricing timing and waiting, not safety. Ignore anyone offering a ride before you reach the marked rank.
Do I need to negotiate the price?
Not with us — the number is agreed on WhatsApp before you fly and the driver collects exactly that. At the rank the dispatcher states a price when you arrive at the queue.
Is a private transfer cheaper than a taxi from STI?
Usually, and the gap grows with distance. On a short Santiago run the difference is a few dollars; on Cabarete, Constanza or Santo Domingo it is substantial.
Can I just use Uber from the airport instead?
It is inconsistent. App coverage right at STI arrivals is thin, so a driver who accepts may ask you to walk off airport property with your luggage.
Do taxi or transfer prices go up at night at STI?
Ours do not — the same figure applies at 02:00 as at 14:00. At the curb, a thinner late-night queue is exactly when the quoted number tends to be least favourable.
How do I pay a pre-booked transfer?
You pay the driver at the end of the ride in US dollars or Dominican pesos, or settle by bank transfer beforehand if you need an invoice. No prepayment is required to hold the booking.
