STI taxi vs private airport transfer

Comparison · fixed rates from our price list · updated 2026

A curb taxi at STI is legitimate and available; you price it after you land. A pre-booked private transfer costs a fixed amount agreed in writing before you fly, tracks your flight, and waits with a name sign inside the small arrivals hall. For a solo traveler heading straight into Santiago in daylight, the two are close. For families, night arrivals, and anything past Santiago — Puerto Plata, Jarabacoa, the coast — the pre-booked car is the more predictable choice.

Price: quoted after landing vs agreed before you fly

Compare the complete arrangement: who meets you, whether the car is private, the destination address and the written total. A taxi quote is a separate offer; it is not the STI VIP fare.

VIP prices are one-way, per vehicle for 1–6 passengers. Taxes included. Santiago $59; La Vega $89; Jarabacoa $149; Puerto Plata $145; Sosúa $159; Cabarete $169 USD. VIP 7–14: +$40 USD.

Curb fares at STI are not published anywhere; they vary by driver and by how far outside town you are going. As a rough pattern, guests who priced both report the curb quote running noticeably higher on the longer coastal runs to Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete than the fixed rate below.

Wait and the drive over the Cordillera

STI has one small terminal, so waits are generally short even at the taxi stand. The bigger practical difference shows up on the road: the drive north to Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete crosses the Cordillera Septentrional on the Gregorio Luperón highway, and a driver who already knows the route and the weather on the pass makes fewer stops than a curb pickup negotiated on the spot.

A pre-booked driver is inside the small arrivals area before you clear the exit, holding a sign with your surname. There is no queue to join.

Flight delays and night arrivals

A taxi at the stand has no link to your flight; if you land three hours late, the price and the availability are whatever they are at that new hour. A pre-booked transfer is tied to your flight number, tracked, with the driver's arrival shifting for free.

After dark, this matters more on the mountain roads than in town: the pass to Puerto Plata and the route to Jarabacoa have long unlit stretches, and a driver who already has your reservation and hotel name loses no time figuring out where to go.

Groups, vans and luggage

A curb taxi is sized for whoever is at the front of the line — six adults with six large cases is rarely that car. Our VIP covers one to six passengers with luggage in one SUV or minivan; seven to fourteen moves to a van at VIP +$40 on local destinations. Car seats are fitted free when you tell us the ages in advance.

Questions we get on this

Are airport taxis at STI safe?
Yes. The stand outside arrivals is a legitimate, daily-staffed service. The trade-off is that the fare is set at the curb after you land, not agreed in advance.
Is a private transfer cheaper than a taxi from STI?
Often, and the gap widens with distance — the difference is small on the short Santiago city run and larger on Puerto Plata, Sosúa or Cabarete.
Do I pay in advance for a private transfer?
No. You confirm on WhatsApp and pay the driver on arrival, cash or card, at the price quoted in writing beforehand.
What if there are eight of us?
Seven to fourteen passengers ride in a van: VIP +$40 on local destinations. One vehicle, one price, everyone together.
