STI to SDQ on separate tickets: is there enough connection time?
Landing in Santiago and flying out of Santo Domingo means two airport processes and a road journey. Build a complete connection plan before buying separate tickets.

Two airports need one complete plan
STI is Cibao International Airport in Santiago de los Caballeros; SDQ is Las Américas International Airport near Santo Domingo. Changing between them involves a road transfer, not a walk to another gate. A transfer confirmation covers the agreed ground journey; it does not confirm that your flight connection is protected.
Before buying separate tickets, record both operating airlines, flight numbers, local dates and scheduled times. Ask the airlines or ticket seller what happens if the first flight is late, and confirm the baggage arrangements. Do not infer connection protection from using the same airline or keeping both bookings in one conversation.
Work backwards from the SDQ flight
First confirm the departing airline’s recommended airport arrival time. Separately record check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines for that exact flight. A deadline is not a recommended arrival time, and reaching the departures curb is not the same as being ready at the gate. Online check-in does not remove every airport step.
Use this sequence: planned SDQ airport arrival minus road time and a separate traffic reserve equals planned vehicle departure from STI. Then check whether the incoming flight leaves enough time for arrival formalities and meeting the driver before that departure. The SDQ airport allowance already covers its processing stages; do not add the same time twice.
Allow for the gap between landing and the vehicle
Landing time is not pickup time. Account for leaving the aircraft, arrival formalities, baggage collection where required, customs and the meeting with your driver. Ask the airlines where checked bags will be released and how to check them in again. Do not assume bags travel between STI and SDQ without you. Verify the entry and departure requirements for your own travel documents.
Carry-on only may remove a baggage wait, but it does not turn this into an airside connection or guarantee a fast exit. If a checked bag is missing, clarify the airline report before leaving and tell dispatch. Do not skip the report to chase the onward flight, or assume the transfer driver can collect the suitcase later.
Keep road time separate from connection time
Ask dispatch for a journey estimate for the actual date, time and SDQ drop-off, with a separate allowance for traffic and any agreed stops. Published STI–SDQ driving information is a planning reference, not the complete interval you need between flights. The vehicle cannot recover a delay by bypassing airport procedures.
Specify SDQ airport departures, not a Santo Domingo city hotel. Confirm the airline’s current terminal instructions and the agreed vehicle drop-off. A city stop, meal or extra pickup changes the plan and must be agreed in advance. Do not treat the fastest journey estimate as a guaranteed arrival.
Reassess both bookings when something changes
If the STI arrival is late or rebooked, tell dispatch and contact the onward airline about your options before its relevant deadlines. Moving the car to your actual landing does not move the SDQ flight. Share any new flight number, date or airport and obtain an updated ground plan.
If the SDQ flight merely shows a delay, do not automatically postpone the transfer or assume check-in and bag-drop deadlines moved. Obtain the airline’s instructions. A confirmed schedule change is different from a fluctuating estimate. The transfer operator does not promise flight rebooking, ticket refunds or a guaranteed connection.
Use this checklist before you buy and before you travel
Write down: STI flight and local arrival date/time; passengers and every bag; the airline’s baggage instructions; SDQ flight and local departure date/time; recommended SDQ arrival; check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines; road estimate; traffic reserve; proposed STI vehicle departure. Mark unconfirmed items rather than filling them with optimistic guesses.
Send dispatch both flights and the complete plan, then ask for the route, vehicle, pickup, drop-off, price and change conditions in writing. If the plan works only with an immediate STI exit and the quickest drive, examine a later flight or an overnight stay before buying. Confirm any hotel and its separate onward transfer; a Santo Domingo city hotel is not SDQ. There is no universal safe connection interval here.
Can I judge the connection from the driving time alone?
No. Include STI arrival processing and pickup, the road journey and reserve, then the departing airline’s airport arrival recommendation and deadlines at SDQ.
Does online check-in let me arrive at SDQ later?
Do not assume so. Check baggage, document-check and boarding requirements for your airline and flight even if you already have a boarding pass.
Will flight tracking protect my onward flight?
It helps dispatch coordinate the car with your arrival. It does not hold the SDQ flight or establish protection between separate tickets.
Is an overnight stay always necessary?
Not automatically. Compare the actual flights, required processing, road estimate and margin. If the connection depends on every stage going perfectly, consider a different itinerary and confirm its costs and conditions.
