Bag missing at STI? Coordinate your airline report, transfer and hotel delivery

Your flight has arrived in Santiago but your checked bag has not. Here is what to clarify with the airline, your pickup team and your accommodation before leaving STI.

First identify which bag is missing

This guide concerns checked baggage that did not arrive at Cibao International Airport (STI). A suitcase left in the transfer vehicle after a ride is a different case. Flight tracking helps coordinate your arrival; it does not track your suitcase or replace an airline baggage report.

Clarify the airline report before leaving

Ask your airline’s baggage staff how to report the missing bag before you leave the airport. Keep the bag tag, flight details and a description or photograph of the suitcase. Obtain the report reference and the next contact or status-check method. A tracker location does not replace the report.

Procedures and deadlines differ by airline. Do not assume an online form advertised for US arrivals applies in Santiago, or that you can re-enter the baggage area after leaving. If no desk is apparent, ask airline staff where to complete the report and confirm your next step before departure.

Tell dispatch why your pickup is delayed

Use your existing transfer conversation. Give the booking name and flight number, explain that you are completing a baggage report, and ask for revised meeting instructions. State where you are currently able to wait; do not head outside just to find the driver before clarifying the report.

Save the pickup contact and instructions offline when possible. If your connection fails, ask airport or airline staff how to contact your pickup team. Do not assume WiFi is always available. Confirm waiting arrangements with dispatch; an airport pickup is not an agreement to collect or deliver your bag later.

Confirm an address where the bag can actually be received

Give the airline the full property name, street address, town, booking name, reachable contact and dates you will stay there. “Hodelpa” alone does not identify a hotel. Ask reception whether it can accept a delivery on your behalf and what information it requires.

For a villa or gated community, agree the entrance, unit and receiving contact with the host. Check courier access separately: permission for your transfer vehicle does not automatically cover a baggage courier. Ask the airline whether delivery to that exact address is available, including any conditions or charges.

Keep onward travel and baggage delivery in sync

If you stay in Santiago before continuing to Jarabacoa, Puerto Plata, Sosúa or Cabarete, tell the airline when the delivery address changes. Ask how and until when an update can be accepted. Updating your transfer destination does not update the airline’s baggage file, and the reverse is also true.

Before leaving STI, clarify whether the airline will arrange delivery or requires collection, who will contact you and what to do if the bag arrives after you move. Do not make a second airport journey on an assumption. A delivery time, coverage outside Santiago and collection by a third party all need confirmation.

Two messages to send before departure

To the airline: “My checked bag did not arrive on my flight to STI. Here are my flight details and bag tag. Please confirm my report reference, the next step and whether delivery is possible to my accommodation for these dates.” Supply personal details privately through the airline’s confirmed channel.

To dispatch: “This is the booking under [name], arriving on [flight]. I am still completing a missing-baggage report. I am currently at [location] and reachable on this number. Please confirm the pickup plan.” Before departure, keep the report reference, airline contact, agreed delivery or collection plan and updated pickup instructions together.

Will the driver know my bag is delayed?

Not from flight tracking alone. Tell dispatch as soon as you know you must complete a baggage report and confirm the pickup arrangements.

Can the transfer driver collect the bag later?

Do not assume this is included. Any separate collection requires agreement with the operator and the airline, including authority to release the bag and any charges.

What if I change hotels?

Update the airline through its confirmed procedure and notify dispatch separately if your transfer changes. Ask the new accommodation whether it can receive the bag.

Do I need to return to STI?

Only follow the collection or delivery plan confirmed by the airline. Do not travel back without confirming that the bag is available and how it can be released.
