Flying into STI with a Bicycle: Plan Your Bike-Box Transfer
Flying to STI with your bicycle? Confirm bike-case dimensions, passenger and luggage space, arrival pickup, assembly arrangements and your return transfer.
STI VIP editorial team · Published
Before booking a private transfer from Cibao International Airport (STI) with your own bicycle, send the transport team the number of bikes, the outside dimensions and weight of each packed case, the passenger count and all other luggage. Ask them to confirm whether the complete load can be accepted and which vehicle arrangement applies.
Confirm the airline’s requirements before finalising the ground journey
A booking for two passengers does not describe a booking for two passengers, two suitcases and two bicycle cases. Likewise, an airline accepting your bicycle does not confirm that it fits the road vehicle.
Plan the whole journey: the packed bicycle arriving at STI, transport to the exact accommodation, somewhere suitable to unpack it, storage of the empty case and repacking before the flight home.
Check the bicycle policy with the airline operating each flight in your itinerary, including any connecting service.
Confirm the permitted packaging, size and weight limits, any advance registration, applicable charges and restrictions affecting your particular journey. Do not rely on an old screenshot or another traveller’s experience with a different carrier.
Airline instructions can distinguish between a hard case, a bicycle bag and a cardboard box. Follow the requirements applying to your booking rather than assuming that all bicycle packaging is treated identically.
Treat an e-bike as a separate airline question
Do not assume that a policy for a non-motorised bicycle also covers an electric bicycle.
Ask the airline specifically about the bicycle and its battery. Removing a battery does not, by itself, establish that the remaining bike or the battery can travel.
Check tools, pumps, inflation cartridges and other accessories separately against the relevant baggage rules. A road-transfer confirmation cannot authorise an item for air travel.
Measure the packed case, not the bicycle frame
The transport team needs the space the object will occupy when the driver meets you. Measure the outside length, width and height of each closed case or box, including protruding handles or wheels. Give its approximate packed weight and identify whether it is rigid or flexible.
A frame size, wheel size or bicycle model does not provide those measurements. Neither does the airline’s total linear dimension: a combined measurement does not show the shape of the item that must be loaded.
The sports-equipment transfer guide explains why equipment needs advance notice. For a bicycle, provide all three dimensions and the actual packed configuration. The table describes an assessment, not confirmation that every configuration can be carried.
| Bicycle configuration | What the transport team needs to assess |
|---|---|
| Bicycle inside a rigid case | Full outside dimensions, weight and whether the case must remain in a particular orientation. |
| Bicycle in a soft travel bag | Packed dimensions, protected components and whether the bag can safely flex. |
| Bicycle in a cardboard transport box | Complete box dimensions, condition and handling requirements. |
| Assembled or partly assembled bicycle | Its actual configuration, any removed wheels and whether a suitable arrangement can be provided. |
Count people, bicycle cases and ordinary luggage together
Send one complete load list. Include passengers, children, requested child seats, checked suitcases, cabin bags, bicycle cases, separate wheel bags and any other equipment. Do not count only the largest items.
A vehicle’s advertised seating capacity does not establish its remaining luggage space with those seats occupied. Folding a seat to accommodate equipment also changes the space available to passengers.
Use the groups and extra-luggage guide as a starting point, then request written confirmation for your particular load.
Do not assume a roof rack, external bicycle carrier, trailer or specialist restraint system is available. If the arrangement depends on one, it must be expressly confirmed.
Give the exact accommodation and receiving contact
Send the full property name and address, not simply the riding area or town. For a mountain stay, the STI-to-Jarabacoa transfer information provides route context. For a north-coast stay, consult the STI-to-Cabarete transfer information. Neither page confirms bicycle capacity for an individual booking.
Tell dispatch if the final approach involves a gate, a separate reception or somewhere the driver cannot stop directly outside. Ask the accommodation where a large case can be received and whether assistance is available at arrival.
If the actual destination is a cycling organiser’s premises rather than your hotel, send that address and contact separately.
Keep the airport pickup distinct from bicycle assembly
For the simplest handover, plan for the bicycle to remain in the agreed transport packaging until you reach a suitable place to unpack it.
Do not assume the driver can assemble the bicycle, supply tools or wait while you build it at the airport. A transfer is not automatically a bicycle workshop service.
If you intend to change the packed configuration before loading, explain that before booking. Opening the case may create separate wheels, loose components and an empty container that still needs transport.
Arrange somewhere to unpack and store the case
Ask your accommodation or cycling organiser the questions below.
A hotel agreeing to receive your luggage does not necessarily agree to store a large empty bicycle case for the whole trip.
- Where can the bicycle be unpacked?
- Is assembly assistance available, or must it be arranged separately?
- Where can the empty case or box remain during the stay?
- Can it be retrieved before the return pickup?
- What happens to the packaging if you change accommodation?
If the bicycle case is missing or damaged at STI
Keep a photograph of the packed case and its baggage tag available.
If the case does not arrive, clarify the airline report before leaving the airport and tell dispatch what is delaying the pickup. The missing-baggage guide explains how to coordinate the report, your onward journey and any later delivery.
If damage is apparent, ask the airline’s baggage staff about its reporting procedure. Do not treat the transfer driver as the person responsible for accepting an airline claim or assessing the bicycle’s mechanical condition.
If the luggage being transported changes, tell dispatch. A missing case, later delivery or a replacement box can change the practical arrangements.
Reconfirm the return load before collection
Do not leave the return packing plan until the driver arrives. Confirm the airline’s requirements for the departure journey, retrieve the case and allow time to prepare the bicycle before the agreed pickup. Arrange any packing assistance separately.
Tell the transport team if the return differs from the arrival: another accommodation, a different case, an assembled bicycle, extra wheels or additional passengers.
The hotel return-pickup guide explains the meeting-point arrangements. Ask the airline about any additional check-in time required for your bicycle, and agree the road pickup accordingly.
If you plan to finish a ride immediately before leaving, provide a realistic time to return, change and pack. The transfer should not depend on an assumed instant transition from riding to airport departure.
Send one complete bicycle-transfer request
Use a request that describes the journey and the load, as in the example below.
Keep the airline’s bicycle acceptance and the road-transport confirmation as separate records.
To discuss the journey with STI VIP, request your transfer and state at the start that you are travelling with a bicycle. Treat the transport arrangement as a request until its acceptance, vehicle and complete price have been confirmed.
We arrive at STI on [flight and local date] and need transport to [full accommodation name and address]. We are [passengers, including children] with [ordinary luggage list] and [number of bicycles]. Each bicycle will remain in [case, bag or box], measuring [length × width × height, with units] and weighing approximately [weight]. We also have [separate wheel bags or other items]. Please confirm whether you can accept the complete load, the vehicle arrangement and total price. Our proposed return is [date, address and flight], with [same or changed packed configuration].
